Plaid Columns is the collaborative art duo of Rob Matre and Evan Jones. Their mixed-media paintings combine elements of collage and photography with energetic strokes of color. Matre's photographs are the primary subjects, along with vintage imagery, with a focus on how architecture and graphics add visual interest to urban and rural landscapes.
From The Fox Theatre to The Varsity, from The Beltline to Buckhead, and from today's thriving Ponce City Market to vintage scenes of the bustling city streets of Downtown Atlanta, Plaid Columns captures our iconic city with great variety.
With a playful charm and layers of intrigue, Plaid Columns brings history forward in these "renovations" of vintage imagery. Evan Jones' brilliant use of color is on full display in this series.
Rob Matre was born in Jacksonville, Florida, and raised in the Southwest Georgia city of Albany, not far from The Gulf of Mexico. The ocean, and the peace of mind it encourages, remains a constant influence and source of inspiration.
Since long before #classicgeorgia became an instagram sensation and inspired an apparel brand, Rob Matre has thoroughly documented our The Empire State of the South through his Classic Georgia photography series. The resulting photographs, along with vintage images of our great state, fine new energy in this series.
The love of sport, from ball games to hunting and fishing, defines much of our lives. Plaid Columns celebrates sports, connecting the viewer not only to their athletic heroes and favorite teams, but also capturing the very essence of the games we know and love as both participants and spectators.
When it comes to the art of golf, authenticity is paramount, and Rob Matre certainly brings that to this series. Rob Matre is a world renowned golf photographer, photographing over 50 tournaments, including eight U.S. Opens, and well over one hundred courses, including many of the great links courses of Ireland and Scotland. He was also the host and producer of the golf radio show on 790 The Zone until its closing in 2015.
Eschewing the traditional, Plaid Columns refers to these works as "environmental portraits". Usually working from existing photos provided by the client, whether iPhone photos of the kids and family pets, or vintage photos of family members from generations passed, Plaid Columns is proud to offer portraits by commission.
